MDF door trim

Door leaf today acts not only as protection, but also as a decorative element in the room. But many metal models do not differ in exquisite design, as manufacturers are guided by the parameters of burglar resistance and durability. Today there is a way to solve this problem with the help of paneling MDF panels. With this material, you can drastically change the design of the product and improve its technical parameters.

Types of panels

MDF panels are thin boards made from small wood chips. For their connection using compressed and some special glue. But in order to give the products unique characteristics, they are covered with protective materials. Depending on this, there are several types of panels for door trimming:

  • Veneered. The product is covered outside with a thin layer of natural wood. This allows you to give it a unique design.

The veneer is very beautiful and quite well withstands various damage. But the tree is very easy to scratch with sharp objects, and when exposed to high humidity it can swell.

  • Laminated. A special film is applied to the panel lining that takes almost any shape. With this substance you can get high-quality and durable doors.
  • Anti-vandal. The surface of the material is covered with a special plastic in several layers. This design is very resistant to ultraviolet, and also has high strength.

Benefits

MDF panels appeared on the market relatively recently, but have already gained immense popularity. Many manufacturers equip their doors at the production stage. Products of this type have several significant advantages:

  1. Durability. This is ensured by special protective layers, which give the product high strength.
  2. Resistance to UV and water. Lining swell only with constant use in very damp areas.
  3. Low cost. This is achieved through the use of natural and affordable materials, which are waste of primary production.
  4. Environmental friendliness.Lining is absolutely safe for human health, as in its structure contain only natural substances. In this case, the finished product does not emit harmful components in the air (phenol, tar, etc.).

How to do it yourself?

Paneling is a fairly simple process that is easy to do with your own hands. But to get a quality result, You should stock up on some tools:

  • Screws. Please note that their length should not exceed the thickness of the door. This will prevent damage to the inner or outer side of the fabric during plating.
  • Screwdriver and nozzles for screwing fasteners.
  • Hammer.
  • Jigsaw. With it, it will be easier to cut holes for locks and other accessories.

You will also need MDF panels themselves. You can buy them in almost any specialty store. It is important to select their style for the design features of your home.

Please note that after installing the lining the thickness of the door leaf will increase. In some cases, the old locks will simply be impossible to install on them, so you have to buy new models adapted for these parameters.

It is possible to trim the door leaf with panels both inside and outside. It all depends on personal preference. This procedure begins with the following preparatory operations:

  1. First of all, the door is removed from the hinges. This is necessary in order to simplify further work and eliminate possible distortions.
  2. After that, the hinged hinges are removed from the canvas (if they are not internal), and all the fittings are also dismantled. The canvas should remain completely clean, so that nothing would interfere with the mounting plates.
  3. At this stage, the door should be thoroughly cleaned of dirt. If it is metal products, then they are rubbed with fat-removing compounds.

Some experts recommend that before sheathing them, apply protective paints that prevent the development of corrosion. If the door is made of wood, its surface should be carefully sanded and cleaned.

To improve adhesion, you can glue a special vinyl film around the perimeter.

The installation algorithm of the MDF panel is quite simple and consists of such sequential actions:

  • Before attaching, the panel is carefully wiped to remove dirt.If this is not done, the remaining garbage inside can cause the sheet to simply peel off.
  • At this stage, you should lay the panel on the door leaf and mark on it the location of the holes for the previously dismantled accessories. After that, the product is removed, and special adhesive solutions are applied to the surface of the door.

Experts recommend to distribute the mixture in waves around the perimeter. It is important to remember to smear all edges with glue.

When the mixture is applied, the cover plate is laid on the door leaf and leveled. It is important to press it well so that it lies flat.

To fix its position, you can use clamps. This will not only facilitate the implementation of fasteners, but also eliminate accidental shifts and distortions.

The process ends with additional fixation of the structure with the help of self-tapping screws. To do this, under them pre-drilled holes.

Please note that they should not be cross-cutting. Therefore, it is better to mark the depth of the hole on the drill.

Often, fasteners are placed only around the perimeter of the door leaf at a distance of at least 10 cm. After that, screws are screwed into the panel. So that they do not stick out, their heads are hidden in the pad itself. To do this, when drilling should form a small secret groove. From above the fixture is closed by decorative overlays. When the fastening of the lining is completed, the holes for the accessories are cut out in it and the handles and locks are installed.

The installation of MDF sheets is performed using the same algorithm, regardless of the side of the door. It is important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations and measurement accuracy. Sometimes moldings are used as fasteners, which has the appearance of a decorative strip. They not only securely fix the structure, but also decorate the door, giving it a special appeal.

Carrying out the door trim MDF should be understood that this is a laborious job. Therefore, if you do not have the skills to work with such materials, it is better to entrust the solution of this task to an experienced specialist who will make everything faster and more qualitative.
