Acrylic primers of deep penetration: properties and application

During repairs, you should be very careful at every stage, especially when preparing walls before finishing. As a rule, this is done using a deep penetration primer, which is necessary to improve the adhesion of the wall to the finish. In addition, the soil can perform other important functions necessary for the strength and quality completion of the repair.

One of the best to achieve this goal is an acrylic primer, which has many advantages over all other types.

What it is?

The walls of the renovated premises differ in texture and material, they can be wooden, concrete, plaster and others. Each material has a certain set of properties that are different from another, respectively, and the decorative trim will be held everywhere differently. To grip the wall was as strong as possible, apply a primer that penetrates into the wall and increases its strength. Primers can be universal, antiseptic, anti-fungal and other types. One of the best types is an acrylic primer.

Acrylic primer blend can be applied to any substrate., regardless of material. This composition penetrates very deep into the surface - about 10-15 millimeters, it can be used both for walls and for ceilings. In addition to its universal characteristics, an acrylic primer for interior use may also have antiseptic properties, which is why it is suitable for rooms with high humidity.

Externally, this tool looks like a white liquid with a dispersion of 0.05–0.15 microns. Drying time is no more than 40 minutes. Consumption of the product varies from 80-200 grams per square meter depending on the surface material.

Features and benefits

The main purpose of the soil mixture is to increase the level of adhesion of the wall with the finish. At the same time, the vapor permeability of the base does not decrease, since after hardening the mixture forms a thin lattice capable of “breathing”.Such a lattice is also a skeleton that keeps particles of the surface from splitting. In addition to all this, the soil mixture tends to reduce the porosity of the walls, which allows increasing strength and saving on the use of finishes.

An important advantage of the primer is to protect the wall from dirt and destruction by harmful microorganisms. As a rule, only those materials that do not have a loose texture (concrete, plaster, gypsum and others) are treated with a primer. Acrylic compounds penetrate to the maximum possible depth of the surface, this is their great advantage over other types. Such properties are possible due to aqueous solutions, which are used instead of special substances that form the film.

Acrylic-based dispersions have a very small diameter of micelles, and the smaller the particles, the deeper they can penetrate the surface, thereby strengthening it. Even the smallest parts of the base will be glued and fastened, thereby preventing shedding.

Another advantage of the soil mixture is a decrease in surface absorption, which allows you to save on decorative materials and finishing in the future.Acrylic primers penetrating inside the wall not only dries themselves quickly, but also contribute to a faster hardening of subsequent layers of paint or other mixtures applied to the surface after them.

As a rule, such compositions are used not only for processing walls, but also for other works. Many craftsmen prefer to use them to install linoleum, parquet or carpet.

After the surface is treated with a primer mixture, subsequent repairs will be less complicated and time consuming and financial. Pre-application of soil ensures that the floor will not move away.

How to choose

Before buying and using acrylic primer mix, you should pay attention to some details that will not only help with the choice, but also prevent you from making a mistake. First of all, you need to decide on the task assigned to the product. If you need to strengthen the surface, then for the beginning it is recommended to find out the level of its porosity.

Before starting work, it is necessary to determine the viscosity of the dispersion. To test, apply a bit of soil mixture on a dry surface. If the solution is absorbed within half an hour, it can be concluded that the wall is not porous, respectively, the use of such soil may be ineffective. If the droplet is absorbed literally in ten minutes, we can assume that the correct mixture is selected.

Unfortunately, there are no such tests in the store, so you have to rely on the advice of the employees of the building hypermarket.

The next factor influencing the determination of the optimal properties of acrylic soil is the size of the particles of the ground polymer inside. The smaller they are, the deeper and better the mixture will penetrate, and the less the composition will have to be spent per unit area.

Thanks to the right choice of purchase, the initial vapor permeability of the base is preserved and the decorative coating consumption is reduced. There are cases when instead of acrylic primer mixers use acrylic paints diluted with a special solvent. Most often this happens during interior work, but you can also use them for exterior decoration, but with one condition: the base treated in this way should not be exposed to moisture for five hours.

During work with a certain basis, an important factor is the acidity index, which is always indicated in the technical characteristics of the composition. The higher it is, the less recommended this compound is for use on old bases with salt stains.

Acrylic primers of deep penetration with high acidity should not be used for outdoor applications. Most often, these mixtures are used to repair interior.

Application technology

Acrylic primer mixtures of deep penetration should be applied in a special way, having previously examined the surface for the presence of cracks or crevices. In case of detection of too large holes, the diameter of which exceeds one and a half millimeters, it is desirable to seal them with a putty, as they not only increase the consumption of the solution, but also adversely affect the vapor-permeable properties of the base. After the check, it is recommended to immediately clean the wall from rust traces, since with a high acidity of the composition, even a small percentage of rust may cause an unnecessary chemical reaction.

This item is especially important if the repair occurs in areas with constant changes in moisture levels, where the risk of rust formation is increased.

It is important to determine the texture of the surface, as this determines the level of consumption of the composition. If during the development of conventional materials the mixture will be consumed by about 80 g / m2, then in case of impregnation of highly porous surfaces, the consumption will be much higher.

In the latter case, it is allowed to slightly dilute the soil mixture with water (9-14% of the total mass), which will increase the possibility of its deep penetration.

For better application of acrylic compositions, professional craftsmen recommend using a roller., as it provides a more uniform and fast application. Before applying a second coat, wait between twelve and twenty-four hours. The longer this time period, the better, since surface freezing does not guarantee complete drying of the applied composition. Particles penetrating into the material being processed continue their work on strengthening the walls for a long period of time. That is why manufacturers, wanting to be safe once again,The technical characteristics prescribe the maximum waiting time for the first layer to be ready for thin substrates, and the minimum for bulk ones.

The properties of the soil compositions indicate the maximum size of the particles that are not removed from the pile when using a brush or roller. Very often, the residual layer of soil that is not absorbed into the substrate remains on the tool and then gets onto other materials. It is then quite difficult to remove, which is why it is recommended to hold a small plywood or a chipboard sheet next to the mixture capacity in order to carry it over with the application tool before the next use. Only after complete removal of the residual mass will it be possible to re-dip the roller in the container with the composition.

Professional craftsmen do not recommend using aerosols or sprays when working with acrylic soil mixtures of deep penetration, as they are very wasteful.

Overview of popular brands

The composition "Optimist" is a mixture with antiseptic additives. Available in banks with a volume of 10 liters at a price of 600 rubles, which is very democratic. Consumption is 150-250 ml / m2. Application temperature - from 5 to 35 degrees. The composition dries in two hours, which will help to reduce the duration of repair work. Among the advantages of the primer are the prevention of mold. The only disadvantage of this mixture is an unpleasant smell.

Lacra Acrylic Soil Blend is also available in 10 liters capacity.but it costs 1000 rubles. The flow rate varies from 50 to 100 g / m2, penetrates the solution to a depth of 1-5 millimeters. The primer dries within 3 hours. The mixture has no toxic smell.
