Epoxy paint: types and their characteristics

Successful repair is a carefully planned repair. And if it comes to choosing a high-quality coloring matter, then the best will be the one that will surely fall beautifully on the surface, and most importantly - it will keep a fresh look for a long time.

At the moment, the choice of a variety of dyes is quite wide. And epoxy paints occupy a certain place in it.

What it is?

The epoxy dye is based on resin. Many are interested in what epoxide itself is. It turns out that in Greek this word means “sour.” In other words, epoxy paint can be called an oxidizing agent.

Characteristic

Epoxy is an excellent option if you need a truly durable coating that can withstand any aggressive effects, even chemical ones.

This proves a fairly wide scope of this type of dyes: for exterior decoration in places with poor climatic conditions, for all sorts of equipment,using high temperatures.

Of course, if the floor is covered with this paint, it will last much longer than after coating with other types of coloring agents, and the walls will suffer the effects of very caustic detergents.

This color is perfect for coloring metal, concrete and a large number of other bases.. Roughly speaking, only one composition can easily handle the whole room. This will greatly simplify the workflow, because then there will be no need to buy various solutions, thereby stretching the work for a long time - epoxy paint will lay down well on any foundation.

In addition, it has other advantages:

  • Epoxy dye is sufficiently resistant to chemical aggression, it will not turn yellow with time, however, before applying it, it is necessary to prepare the base: clean, degrease, dry;
  • this type of paint has a great property - it is very resistant to atmospheric phenomena, this means that it can safely cover surfaces in the open space, roofs, walls, and you can also paint metal joints;
  • Many believe that the main advantage is that it can paint fresh, wet concrete. When performing work that needs to be done on time, this advantage can be very useful;
  • epoxy paint is waterproof, thanks to which it can paint bathrooms and other rooms with high humidity;
  • the coloring composition has electrical insulating properties, as well as high heat resistance and refractoriness;
  • epoxy paint can recover on its own (under heavy loads, its film can bend, but then it returns to its original position);
  • In addition to the above, the epoxide will not allow bacteria to multiply and will be able to protect the surface well from corrosion, and the wooden surface from rotting. The dye will not allow insect pests to penetrate the surface.

This paint has disadvantages:

  • Epoxy paint is very resistant, it retains its bright colors even after exposure to aggressive environment, but it is also its main disadvantage. The fact is that if you need to change the color of the surface to another, it will be very difficult to do with such a property;
  • this dye has many advantages, respectively, it affects its value - it is quite high;
  • there is also one nuance that is tangential to powder paint. When using this type of dye, you need to be prepared for the fact that it may turn yellow when overheated.

Composition

As mentioned earlier, resin is included in epoxy paint. That is why it is so durable.

But there are other components of it, which must necessarily comply with GOST:

  • diluent. This component is necessary for better and faster connection and dissolution of the other components;
  • pigments. They are necessary to obtain the desired color;
  • fiberglass. This component improves heat resistance;
  • hardener. Thanks to this component, the dye dries several times faster;
  • binders. They help to improve the viscosity of the paint.

Kinds

Epoxy paints are divided into several types:

  • two-component;
  • aerosol;
  • powder.

Two-component paint is considered the most common in everyday life. In addition to industrial enterprises, it is often used at home.It consists of two components, before starting work they must be thoroughly mixed.

The aerosol is considered the most resistant, it is not afraid of corrosion.

It can also easily withstand the effects of aggressive environments, including atmospheric phenomena. This paint has a great ability - it can be cleaned on its own. Any base will become much more scratch resistant after aerosol coating.it will also give the surface a beautiful glossy look.

Powder paint is still more used in industry, because it has high enough characteristics. At home, it is used extremely rarely, because heating chambers are required for hardening the coating.

Such dyes can be divided into two subspecies:

  1. Polyester. Such paints have maximum wear resistance, they improve the protection of the surface against friction.
  2. Epoxy polyester. These coloring compositions have a rather low price, with low abrasion resistance properties, but they are quite resistant to ultraviolet and high temperature.

Scope of application

The following bases can be coated with epoxide:

  • concrete;
  • metal;
  • tiles, baths, ceramics;
  • plastic;
  • plaster.

Consider some of the applications.

Epoxy paint is one of the best materials for painting concrete.. Concrete is a fairly reliable and solid foundation, but without the necessary processing it looks very ugly, moreover, it is completely unstable to some external influences, such as humidity, chemicals and other things. Epoxy concrete floor dye consists of two components, before applying it is necessary to dilute these components in the required proportions. After curing, the paint will create a sufficiently strong film on the surface, it will protect the screed well from external factors, eliminate defects on the surface, at the same time will give it a beautiful decorative look.

Epoxy contains anticorrosive two-component enamel, so it is the best option for metal as well as reinforced concrete structures. The paint forms a thick, impact resistant layer that is resistant to chemical hazards. It is quite possible for it to paint an unprepared surface, rust without prior priming..

More often experts advise exactly epoxy coloring compositions for coating ceramic tiles and baths, as they create a very durable coating. In addition, the paint has a waterproof: enamel will perfectly stay on the ground and protect it from moisture. It dries pretty quickly.

However, before painting begins, it is necessary to carefully prime the surface to be painted.

If you need will paint plastic, such as fiberglass or carbon fiber, it is also recommended to use these paints on such basesbecause they have excellent adhesive properties. The dye can be used as the primary material on many types of plastics. But it should be noted that the epoxy layer is completely non-elastic, and the plasticizer cannot be used with it.

Epoxy paints are well suited for plastered surfaces.. Their advantage is that they can cover the walls without much preparation. They will perfectly protect the basis, will excellently fix a plaster layer. In addition, we must again take into account the fact that the paint dries out pretty quickly, it only takes three, maximum four hours,but nevertheless final drying will come not earlier than in a week.

How to choose?

To choose the right epoxy paint, you need to consider a few points:

  • on what type of surface the paint will be applied. For example, if you need to paint metal or reinforced concrete structures, epoxy spray paint will work better than, for example, powder paint, as it is highly resistant to corrosion;
  • where the surface will be. In other words, do not forget about the effects of the environment and atmospheric phenomena. You will not use powder paint at home, if you do not have heating chambers, you can safely use two-component paint instead;
  • it is also necessary to determine how the surface will be subjected to loads. As, for example, walls, floors and even the ceiling in such areas as a garage, workshop, boiler room are most often prone to major damage and exposure to chemicals;
  • You need to calculate the area of coverage in order to immediately purchase the required amount of paint.

Terms of use

If you correctly calculated the area of coverage, then you will be able to choose the right tools for quality work. If the surface area is large enough, then a roller will be very convenient for work. With this tool you can evenly apply the paint without drips. For a surface with a small area, as well as for painting small parts, it is better to use a brush.

When applying epoxy paint, it is important to follow a number of specific rules so that your work is of high quality:

  • The surface must be degreased. Remove traces of fat and oil from it. The surface can be cleaned with detergents or a solvent.
  • The surface is desirable to grind. If the surface volume is small, this can be done manually using emery paper. Grinders will already be needed on large surfaces.
  • The bottom layer of the surface can be sprinkled with fine sand, after the layer has hardened, excess sand needs to be removed, then apply a new layer.

              Most paints, including epoxy paints, can cause allergies, skin burns, and breathing. Therefore, it is important to observe the following safety guidelines during operation:

              • in no case can not be used in working with paint dishes, which is intended for food;
              • It is necessary to work with epoxy paints in gloves and in overalls. And when grinding the cured surface, you must wear glasses and a respirator;
              • Store epoxy paint in a closed container. Storage temperature should not exceed 40 ° C. Shelf life - no more than 12 months;
              • if suddenly epoxy paint has got on the skin, it is necessary to immediately wash it off with cool water and soap or wipe the place where the paint has entered with denatured alcohol;
              • It is necessary to work with epoxy paints indoors with ventilation.
