Wadded mattresses

 Wadded mattresses

Sleep is a natural human need. The bed and its attributes accompany humanity from distant cave times. The quality of bedding, be it a pillow or a blanket, bed linen, a mattress, has not changed much since then. The functional feasibility of these items has always been in the first place. Among the numerous inventions of mankind that have reached the present day almost unchanged for comfortable sleep, you can select wadded mattresses.

Features and benefits

The usual wadded mattress, on which our grandmothers slept, and today is a simple and reliable companion to the realm of Morpheus. The simplicity and reliability of the product provide the features of its manufacture, design, or rather, the lack thereof.This basically distinguishes this product from other types of mattresses, more modern: polyurethane foam, spring, orthopedic, can be listed for a long time.

But is it worth spending time and money if an elementary comfortable rest can be obtained from an unpretentious but very pretty cover made of bright natural fabrics with dense stuffing with a hypoallergenic filler.

In the absence of a bed, it is possible to use it directly on the floor (is it not usually because mattresses are sold in furniture stores). Comfortably soft and warm for a child, strong enough and tough for an adult, quilted wadded mattresses have not lost their relevance and popularity today.

Regardless of the weight of a person, this type of product retains its shape, showing elasticity without springs. The product is quite flexible: it folds well into a weighty roll, convenient for carrying and transporting. Polyurethane, polyurethane foam, and, especially, the spring is unlikely to be able to give such a compact form.

Many contribute to the demand and in our time, budget prices for this type of bedding attributes. If necessary, you can replace it with a new product without much damage to the wallet.

Thanks to all these features, wadded mattresses are still widely used not only at home, but also in public institutions: hospitals, hotels, boarding schools, army barracks. The product is functional and economical for a temporary stay that does not require special comfort: in hostels, hostels. It is pleasant to stretch out on the shelf of the reserved car of a long-distance train, covered with a faithful companion - a wadded mattress, filled with fresh linen, falling asleep under the measured sound of the wheels.

How does it work?

The device of this antique bed attribute has not changed much since the time of Peter I. Then they were first brought to Russia from Germany and Holland. Sturdy, springless bed cover of bed sizes is tightly packed with cotton. Then it is quilted together with a filler in a certain way, resembling a four-sided tie.

The perimeter of the cover is otstrochen from all sides at a short distance from the edge. The resulting sides form the frame of the product.

This allows, after stuffing the cover with a cotton filling, to keep the shape of the structure, giving it strength and at the same time flexibility. The cover of a wadded mattress is not removable, it is sewn up tightly. The product is quilted (dived) over the entire surface with a special stitch with peaks. It fastens the case with a filler and improves the characteristics and quality of the goods.

Specifications

Compliance by manufacturers of these products with the standards of existing GOSTs maintains the standard level of product quality. This ensures successful competition with numerous modern models of bed attribute, contributes to its relevance.

The standards established for the filler product, give it not only softness, pomp, but also elasticity, low thermal conductivity.

The quality of the material of the cover - its density, set in the range of 110-190 g / m - does not allow dust to pass inwards and wool fibers to the outside. All material characteristics for the cover are governed by the current GOST 7701-75, as well as GOST 11039-2015. The last document replaced the widely used 11039-84, but without any special changes. For example, the fabric, as before, should not exceed the standard allocation of formaldehyde, wear, shed.

Increases the service life of the product through the piercing with peaks ("buttons"), if their number (minimum - 16 peak) meets the standards.Improving production processes has increased the guaranteed service life of this type of product to five years. In practice, with the observance of the rules of care and operation, it can be doubled. To do this, as well as to facilitate the care of the product, you can optionally purchase an additional removable cover, selecting the size of the product.

Composition

The main filler is, as the name implies, cotton wool. This is special, non-medical cotton. The current GOST 5679-91 "Cotton wool cotton clothing and furniture. Specifications ”defines the quality characteristics of the filler used in the product. White cotton wool consists of a mixture of short and long cotton fibers. They do not allow the mass to fall into clumps and coagulate. It is a mixture of fibers of different lengths gives the finished product pomp, softness, elasticity.

White wool mattresses do not cause allergies when used, unlike polyurethane and polyurethane foam.

Mattress manufacturers usually write the word GOST on labels. This means that the filler is white cotton made from 100% cotton (sewing, Premium or Lux). Labeling of PB means regenerated fiber, that is, recovered from the remnants of weaving materials. PB may be white, but this is a different quality.

The fibers, well processed on special equipment, are stuffed into covers of standard sizes from cotton fabrics: teak or calico, polycotton. As a result of this process, they gain a standard weight corresponding to the dimensions (from 6 kg for a product of 60x190 cm, to 13 kg for a 160x190).

Which is better - foam or cotton?

Choose from the above two best product - a matter of taste. Each type of product has disadvantages and advantages. Foam rubber is synthetic, wool is natural, it will not cause allergies. Foam rubber is aging rather quickly: it turns yellow, is sprinkled with fine dust at destruction. When this dust penetrates through the surface of the cover to the outside, which is not conducive to the health of the user. Cotton wool is more durable. It is not without reason that this type of mattress often wanders through the families of relatives and is successfully passed on by inheritance to the next younger generation.

On the other hand, foam products are lighter in weight than cotton. But they also bend more easily; wadded ones are more resilient; they keep their shape better with a greater weight of the user. Their prices are comparable, but wadded ones are still more economical, even if the filler is luxe, and on the cover there is a label “100% cotton”.

Dimensions

Cotton mattresses are divided into:

  • single beds;
  • double;
  • one and a half;
  • children.

They are made on the same dimensional grid. All dimensions of the product are standard and correlated with the parameters of a person: his height and shoulder width.

GOST determines the dimensions of products: parameters, weight. Size chart for single products:

  • 90 x 200;
  • 80 x 200;
  • 80 x 190;
  • 90 x 190.

Double mattresses differ in double width:

  • 160 x 200;
  • 140 x 200;
  • 200 x 200;
  • 160 x 190;
  • 140 x 190;
  • 190 x 190;

There are so-called bastards: wider than single beds, but already double:

  • 120 x 200;
  • 120 x 190

As can be seen from the size grid presented here, all mattresses are, like beds for them, of two standards of length — 190 cm and 200 cm (for very tall people — above 175 cm).

Children's mattresses are much narrower in width, shorter in length (60x120, 80x160). But their length can reach the size of a standard product for adults (70 x 190).

The thickness of the products also varies: from thin (4-8 cm) to 18 cm for premium goods. The greater the thickness, the higher the mattress and the better the spine feels. But the cost of such a product will be more expensive.

Manufacturers

This product is widely represented on the Russian market by both domestic and foreign manufacturers.Imported models are usually made in China. It is preferable to choose a product from Russia, since its production complies with the standards regulated by state standards. In domestic production, compliance with the standard sanitary and hygienic requirements, quality control in contrast to foreign models are monitored. Their quality criteria may not coincide with domestic standards.

With all the simplicity of the device of a wadded mattress, the danger may come from the quality of processing of the filler, the composition of dyes for the cover.

Behind the bright attractive colors may be used in the manufacture of toxic and allergenic materials. The filler can be treated with unknown reagents. Often offered product "from the manufacturer" - small workshops. Here it is necessary to be more careful, since small productions find it more difficult to comply with all the requirements of the GOST and the quality of the raw materials used.

How to choose?

Choose a wadded mattress using organoleptics. It is necessary to touch, smell, maybe even sit on it (if the seller does not mind).The product should be pleasant to the touch, even, without lumps, have a neutral smell. Extraneous chemical odors or the smell of mold coming from the product, should be alerted. They signal possible irregularities in the production process or storage. The cover of a wadded mattress should be clean, free of dust and stains. It is necessary to check the integrity and quality of the seams, the presence of gaps in the filler.

It is recommended to examine the label with the marking of the goods, to clarify:

  • the size;
  • the composition of the filler;
  • case material;
  • manufacturer;
  • indication of GOST.

You may even need to ask the seller the documents for the compliance of the goods with sanitary and hygienic norms. This is especially important if the product is purchased for children. Only then you can be sure of the high quality and safety of the product.

Restoration

In the case of the need arising during the operation of a small repair of a wadded mattress, it is produced independently.

You can clean the pollution with household detergents.

When choosing them, one should remember about the possibility of subsequent contact of the surface of the product with the skin. Shampoo, whipped in the foam, well cope with stains.It is easy to sew up a seam that has gone away, to patch a leaky cover sheet. Even a case with a filler, in the presence of sewing skills and a machine, is not so difficult to resist.

It may be costly to return the product for restoration to a specialized workshop. It is easier and more economical to buy a new wadded mattress. Many problems can be avoided if we take as a rule periodic drying of the mattress in the fresh air. Vata is very hygroscopic, it can dampen. It is also recommended from time to time to turn the product on the other side in order to avoid knocking lumps and caking filler.

Advantages and disadvantages

Like any product, this product has its positive and negative sides, benefits and harms they bring. On the one hand, wadded mattresses:

  • provide comfortable rest and healthy sleep;
  • as a natural product, safe for humans, do not emit toxic substances, allergens;
  • environmentally friendly (harmless to the environment during operation and disposal) for the same reason;
  • compact in storage and easy to transport;
  • simple care does not cause any problems;
  • budget price available to any buyer.

On the other hand, there is a negative: wadded mattresses do not have orthopedic properties.

They cannot provide comfortable rest of such level as modern mattress products with springs from new materials belonging to the orthopedic group.

The filler (wool) does not accurately follow the contours of the body, so it is not possible to completely relax. A long stay on a fairly stiff bed leads to leaking of various parts of the body. There may be pain in the cervical or lumbar spine.

In case of insufficient drying and airing, it is possible to provoke the development of fungal organisms, which waste products can lead to physical indisposition (at least, headache, loss of memory, attention), cause allergic manifestations, especially dangerous in children.

Reviews

With a huge variety of mattresses in the modern market, there are few reviews about this product. Basically, they relate to the problem of choosing children's models of goods.

It is gratifying that many parents stop their attention on wadded mattresses, trying to avoid an allergic reaction in a child. They are also taken care of by the posture of their beloved offspring.At the beginning of the life path too soft bed does not relax the muscles and leads to a curvature of the spine. Of particular interest to this product are large families, having convinced themselves of its practicality in its practicality, efficiency and obvious benefits to the health of children.

Judging by the opinions of the parents concerned, the individual reaction of the child’s body to the composition of the synthetic components of the models promoted by marketers may not coincide with the stated properties of these products. It is here that the old and kind, soft and warm wadded mattress, on which more than one generation of Russians has grown, comes to the rescue.
