Wood stains: varieties and colors

Wooden houses are in great demand, it is worth remembering that they require special care. To protect buildings from external factors, you should pay attention to wood stains. In the house, this tool can cover almost all wooden surfaces and furniture.

Special features

Wood stain is a dark liquid, which is applied to a wooden surface to obtain a certain color, to tint a more even texture or to emphasize the structure of the desired object. It is often used as a protective agent for plywood, fiberboard and particleboard against various negative factors, such as mold and rot.

There are many varieties of this remedy. Each has its own properties that should be considered, because the final result depends on this. Features of the substance are different, for example, fast drying, toxicity, the ability to primer some irregularities.There are liquids that have a smell, and others - are characterized by its complete absence.

And also do not forget that the different types of wood stain should be applied in different ways. For example, a liquid mixture is best applied with an airbrush, and for a very thick solution a brush is better suited.

The most important condition for the preparation of the mixture for application to the working materials is the clean surface of the building material. It should not be old paint or other coatings. It is desirable to get rid of debris and dust, otherwise this application will be meaningless. In order for the stain to be good on the material, it is best to polish it, and in many cases even sanded, then the color will be more saturated, and tinting will not necessarily be applied a second time. Of course, to be sure of the effect, you should try how easy it is to apply and how well it lays on the surface. Stains are a budget option, which is another indisputable advantage.

It is not necessary to use the stain as a tint, it can be used as a protection against external factors: ultraviolet radiation, moisture and other vagaries of nature.If you need to give a wooden surface a different color, then after a certain surface preparation, you can use any paint. The choice is individual. It will fall perfectly on the surface treated with stain.

Diversity

Today, many modern wood stainrs offer a wide range of products. Among the proposed range with ease you can choose the best option depending on the purpose of use. The following types of stain can be distinguished:

  • alkyd liquid is the most dense stain on the structure, used for both exterior and interior wood. It is also called oil;
  • water toning is the easiest to use. It is applied easily, absorbed almost instantly (approximate drying time - 12 hours), is completely non-toxic and has no caustic smell;
  • rustic wood stain is ideal for fans of parquet floors in the old style. It gives any floor a beautiful shade of antiquity;
  • alcohol toning is in great demand, characterized by fast drying;
  • powder options require adherence to the proper proportion of preparing the stain for use, without departing from the instructions in the instruction;
  • nitro models are based on a solvent.

Fluids are used for both external and internal work.

The choice of tools for painting

    When applying stain to a wooden surface, it is necessary to take into account not only its properties and qualities, but also the specificity of materials, and even the quality of the brush.

    For applying the liquid you need to use brushes made of artificial fibers, since they are stronger, their fibers will not peel off when painting. A natural fiber brush will leave fine hairs on the surface that will look very ugly. Natural brushes are unreliable because they will stick to the surface. It is necessary to paint with a brush along the fibers for better absorption into the surface.

    Spray guns or spray guns are used to paint in the event that the liquid is not suitable for application by brush. Some fluids must be applied evenly so that there are no stains on the wood.

    The airbrush can be adjusted under your arm, so as not to catch a comfortable distance when painting, but it is convenient to use this equipment.

    Color solutions

    The stain is represented by a variety of different shades, allowing you to quickly and easily impart a necessary shade to a wooden flooring. The color scheme is diverse. There is a wide choice of a color palette of water stain.

      How to cook with your own hands?

      Another unexpected decision in the world of repair is a self-made stain. Usually it is used by experiment lovers. If there is no necessary stain on the market, then you can create such a tool on an acrylic basis of a certain color yourself. Like an alcohol liquid, the acrylic-based stain is easy to use and very easy to mix. It is also suitable for both internal and external work, and is no different from a simple solution.

      To independently prepare the wood stain for wood, you need to take a regular jar of small jam. Scraps of iron shavings or small nails of such size that they fit in a can are also needed. You should send the iron in a can and pour vinegar on top of it.Leave for 5–6 days. Vinegar will get the color of the stain, but it can become either darker or lighter. It will depend on how long the iron will stay in the liquid. After the appearance of the shade, the iron must be pulled out of the jar and you can try to apply the stain on the desired surface.

      To prepare the stain, you can use a colorant - it is an acrylic paint of very thick composition, so its colors are clean without mixing. The recipe is simple: to create a liquid, it is necessary to dilute the paint and water in a ratio of 2: 1. This option is characterized by density, so it is used to create dark shades. When stirring, it is recommended to achieve a creamy liquid. When it turns out, you need to check whether such a concentration of the solution. If the effect of a store liquid is needed, it should be diluted as thin as possible.

      Try to apply the stain, cooked with your own hands, on the surface should be a brush, as usual alcohol. There are many ways to prepare a liquid with your own hands, but this is one of the easiest and most reliable. When using it, you can get the desired shade without a doubt.

      Mixing

      Not everyone knows that the stain can be mixed. Even with such a large color palette, you can always find a certain shade. It should be borne in mind that even aqueous solutions of different brands have different odors, some give a little alcohol, and some - gouache.

      Before mixing two shades of stain, it is better to consult the store with the seller, because he knows exactly how they differ.

      There are many examples of mixing this fluid for an unusual result, namely:

      • mixing mahogany and ebony, turns purple;
      • mahogany and lemon when mixed becomes like a shade of maple;
      • lemon and ebony give a pale green, marsh color;
      • walnut and mountain ash give the color of mocha.
      • plum and marigold also turn into mocha, only less concentrated, looks more pale;
      • when mixing mahogany and blue, it turns out to be unusual for this mixture - purple.
      • walnut, gray and ebony gives a black color.
