Velvet curtains

Modern interior design allows almost everything - in a fashion as comfortable and minimalist solutions, and royally luxurious. In an ordinary city apartment you can hang exquisite velvet curtains, thereby ennoble the look of your home.

Features and benefits

Velvet is a dense fabric with a soft, high pile. They invented this strange matter in China and for a very long time kept the subtleties of its creation secret. In Europe, this knowledge penetrated in the XIII century. Velvet loved the kings and nobles of the Old World. Local weavers began to create their velvet, and soon a whole multitude of its species appeared, in particular:

  • Velvet (or "Manchester" velvet).
  • Velours.
  • Moket, trip, chenille - velvet fabrics for furniture upholstery and use in the interior.
  • Panne (fabric with extruded pattern).
  • Plis (cotton velvet).
  • Plush (velvet with a very high pile).

Any velvet fabric is difficult to manufacture. This (except for the cost of raw materials, of course) is due to its high cost. In a special way the threads are intertwined so that two canvases are obtained at the same time - as if one on another. In this case, the cloths are tied together by a silk or synthetic thread, which later forms a pile. Then, with a special knife, the blades are cut across — and so is velvet.

Classic and the most expensive velvet is made of silk, however modern technologies allow to produce this fabric from synthetic, cotton and wool.

Velvet - the perfect material for curtains. It is dense, which means that the curtains will not let the light through. It forms surprisingly beautiful folds. The severity of the material and soft texture give the room a very expensive look.

Among the shortcomings of this material as a curtain can be noted the difficulty in care (it is best to hand over such products to dry cleaning), the tendency to accumulate dust and heaviness - velvet curtains will require a very durable metal cornice.

Models

Curtains of velvet to the classics. Most often these are two curtains from the eaves to the floor. They can be attached to the plastic or round cornice. They can be collected on a curtain tape with hooks, tightly draped. Curtains made of fleecy material on grommets look very nice - metal rings are set exactly at an equal distance from each other - this allows the fabric to hang down in perfectly smooth folds. At the same time, it is very easy to move them away and move along the eaves, the gravity of the velvet in this case is practically not felt.

Straight velvet curtains are best to complement with tulle - but rather, not to protect from the sun, but for a complete picture and interior completeness.

If the window is small, you can decorate it with one velvet curtain - it also looks very beautiful. Under the curtain hangs tulle. In the afternoon the curtain moves aside, and tulle covers the window opening.

It is perfectly acceptable to make velvet curtains shortened - for example, just below the window sill. In this case, they must be very voluminous in order to form a large number of beautiful folds.

The velvet curtains of any length very nicely overcook with grabs. If there are two curtains - the hooks are made on both sides of the window, if one - with one.Although if you make a mount for picking up on both sides, you can “lead” the curtain to one or the other side. Holders can be wide velvet, satin, braided from cords.

If we talk about accessories, the interior style is important.

For luxurious rooms in the style of French kings lambrequin is sure to come in handy. It can be straight, can be draped in a semicircle or in some other elegant way. To add pomp and chic, gold twisted cords, tassels, ruffles, satin or wide lace trim curtains will do. Such models will look best in a large living room or bedroom.

Today it is almost impossible to find curtains from the classic velvet on the market. It is too expensive and not very convenient to operate. Manufacturers of curtain fabrics "invented" their velvet - rather dense fabric with a thick pile, shiny and beautifully draped. It is considered that the best samples of such fabrics are produced in Turkey and Poland. You can pick up both fabric and finished curtains of Turkish origin.

Suitable styles

As mentioned above,Velvet - a distinctive feature of the classical style in the interior. Feel free to hang such curtains if:

  • You have a big You can even say a huge living room or bedroom.
  • Do you want to give the room a luxurious and rich look.

Classic style is quite strict.

He loves the right lines and symmetry. Ideal if the curtains will be two. They must be absolutely equal and the same. If you take them to the holders, make sure that it looks 100% symmetrical and at the same height, and the place of "meeting" of the curtains on the cornice was exactly in the middle. Lambrequin must be of the correct form and also absolutely symmetrical.

Portieres should not “sweep” the floors — ideally, they should end without reaching a couple of centimeters from the floor. Although there is such a method - hang very long curtains on a small window, so that 30-40-40 cm of fabric lie on the floor. Such curtains are sure to be collected by pickups, but there is still some fabric left on the floor. It looks very stylish and visually increases the height of the ceilings.

For a classic style in the room, you can use a smooth velvet or fabric with embroidery, dusting, decorative inserts. Both opaque, and brilliant variants will equally well look.

But in the modern interior it will be best to look plain matte velvet. It is perfect, for example, to high-tech style.

Monochrome gray or black velvet curtains are ideal for a white and black interior with chrome shiny details. The best model for such an interior - simple and smooth curtains from floor to ceiling. No lambrequins, pickups and other decorations are needed. Velvet fabric will give heat and will “domesticate” the cold office Hi-tech.

Definitely "yes" can be said velvet curtains for the fashionable style Loft. Thick and dense pile material perfectly complements the cold concrete or brick walls. A little pretentious, but very organic in such an interior will look curtains of velvet ribbed.

If the wall is of red brick, dark curtains of burgundy or dark gray are perfect. For a white brick wall, good companions will be curtains of velvet fabric in light gray or beige.

Loft involves large windows, so the curtains in this style - from floor to ceiling. Fastening - curtain tape or eyelets.Lambrequins and other accessories are required.

Velvet curtains perfectly fit the oriental style of the interior. The decor of the room in these directions is rich, rich and expensive.

Designers usually select bright and iridescent velvet for such rooms, sometimes with glitter. No pastel shades, only bright colors - red, green, dark blue, gold, burgundy. Curtains should be heavy and well draped. The folds are rounded, be sure to have grabs. Here come the brush, trim on the edge of the curtains braid with small pompons. You can add twisted cords.

Lambrequin can be both soft and hard.

Pay attention to the lambrequins, as if "carved" from the bottom - that is, their edge is not even, but rather orientally carved with oriental motifs.

In the eastern style curtains can be combined - for example, velvet will be perfectly combined with satin. The satin parts can be sewn at the junction of two canvases, and the back side of the curtains can be made satin. In this case, the curtains are not going to the holders, and bent out so that you can see the wrong side. In color it is better to stay on a contrast combination.

Care

As well as all beautiful, portieres from velvet fabrics will demand careful leaving.

Washing or other radical “general cleaning” of such curtains is a very responsible and one-time event that should not be carried out too often. Experts advise from time to time to carry out only the so-called preventive cleaning.

To remove dust from the fleecy curtains, use a vacuum cleaner - many modern devices in the set have a special brush for curtains and furniture. In size it is quite small. You need to gently walk around the curtains with a vacuum cleaner so that the dust from them falls into the vacuum cleaner, and the fabric itself does not drag on.

You can try to “knock out” the curtains: gently remove them from the eaves and gently shake them several times.

Be sure to brush the vacuum cleaner you need to walk along the eaves, and also to “blow” the pelmets, cords and brushes.

When purchasing fabric, consult the seller about the intricacies of caring for it. There are materials that can be cleaned only in dry cleaning. If this is your case - carefully remove the curtains from the eaves and take them to the receiving point. Masters of cleaning curtains are advised to take a picture of them before removing the curtains from the window. The photo should be attached to the curtains so that the dry cleaners understand how it should look after all the procedures. Such a trick will save your investment.

If your fabric can be washed, do it only with a liquid detergent, loading the automatic machine in half. So you guarantee a thorough rinsing. The washing mode should be the most delicate - “wool”, “silk”.

All decorative elements - frills, soutache, braid before washing or dry cleaning will have to be unpicked and then sewn back.
