Greek curtains

The interior design of an apartment or cottage is unthinkable without window openings. Therefore, the choice of curtains is of great importance. The arsenal of these accessories is limitless, it can be very difficult to dwell on one thing. However, among them there is a model - the so-called Greek curtains, which are hard to miss. Their basic difference is the original antique pattern, which most often represents a geometric and natural ornament. Everything else is a second time, although it is also the hallmark of curtains in the Greek style: strict forms, a wealth of accessories, natural fabrics. All these features make them attractive for use in homes and apartments.

Special features

Curtains in the Greek style stand out from the total mass of accessories for windows. They are distinguished by strict and regular lines, ideal for hot summer weather. These models have distinctive features:

  • simplicity and elegance;
  • environmental friendliness - natural fabrics, light, freely letting in fresh air, at the same time dense and opaque, reliably protecting against ultraviolet radiation;
  • the characteristic ornament is the obligatory use of the antique pattern;
  • symmetry - symmetrical arrangement and placement of parts;
  • universality - such models adapt to any interior, fit any room;
  • ease of sewing - without patterns, you only need to measure the fabric, cut and process the seams. The possibility of sewing at home without any special skills;
  • easy care - the curtain can be quickly removed and washed, does not require special care.

Fabrics, color palette, ornament

Natural colors of the Greek curtains distinguish almost all models of curtains. In the manufacture of used only natural range - the color of the sky, sea, sand, ocher or light green olives. Warm natural tones are very common, all shades of beige and sand.

In some Greek interiors, black and white versions prevail. As a rule, Greek curtains are made in two colors, for which contrast combinations are chosen.Canvases of white and black colors can alternate, which creates the impression of columns, pulling the room upward. Classical Greek curtains are white linen, on the edges of which a contrasting black ornament is applied.

For the manufacture of Greek curtains use only natural fabrics, such as flax, sometimes it is thick cotton, jute or other dense materials. The exception is velvet and leather cloth - in this case they are contraindicated.

Fabrics from which Greek curtains are made must contain a specific antique ornament that has reached our time from ancient Greece:

  • Cretan wave - a wave-like rhythmic ornament with smooth transitions;
  • palmette - an ornament stylized as a palm leaf;
  • floral ornament;
  • images of mythical gods, antique vases, columns;
  • A meander (Greek key) is a type of Cretan wave that looks like an endless broken line that curves at a right angle. This pattern borders the canvas around the edge.

Types of Greek Curtains

For the manufacture of Greek curtains there is no ban on the most different types of curtains. These can be various options:

  • Classic - curtain canvases framed by the obligatory antique ornament, for example, a meander, floor-length, with deep folds that need to be evenly distributed on the canvases, in the form of rhythmic vertical waves. From different sides of the window can be fixed with a special decorative tape. Such curtains are sliding and one-sided, can be a single canvas, where it is possible to use lambrequin. When draping it is necessary to carefully treat the image so that the waves do not violate the integrity of the pattern. Greek curtains do not always have transparent curtains, as they originated from Mediterranean countries, where their role is not so important.

If desired, you can also use transparent curtains, which does not contradict the Greek style. Cornice, grommets and hooks may also contain antique motifs. Instead of the fringe on the curtains, an ornament of a contrasting color along the edges of the canvas is used.

  • Rolled or roller blinds - made of thick natural fabric, which is very characteristic of the Greek style. When lifting, the curtain is wound onto the upper shaft with the help of a special mechanism, for this it is enough to actuate the chain.These models come with different light transmission ability, they are also rich in color. There are options with electric control, it is convenient if access to the window opening is closed for some reason. You can control such a mechanism by means of a remote control or a button on the wall. In exceptional cases, the Greek shutters are included in the system of "smart home";
  • Roman - canvas of rectangular shape, which, when folded, forms horizontal folds, overlapping each other;
  • Greco-Roman - a variation of the Roman, but unlike them, they do not rise up, but are retracted to the side. The canvas is attached to the eaves or to the window frame. A special cord, located on the side, serves to unfold the curtains. Folded curtains are tied in the middle with a decorative ribbon.
  • Curtains curtains - are obtained from heavy and very dense tissues, which roll up from the center to the edges of the window opening and are fixed with special pickups.
  • Jalousie - should be only from natural materials: wood, bamboo, gun. They are hypoallergenic, do not fade in the sun, lightweight, durable and moisture resistant. Easy to care for.

Greek curtains in the interior

Consider the most relevant options:

  • Living room. The interior of the spacious living room uses articles of Greek style made of cloth and wool, in some cases, when this is required by the design, burlap cloths are used. Symmetrically located curtains decorate the window with properly laid folds. To maintain the rhythm, plastic or tissue strips are sometimes inserted. The classic version of the Greek curtains complement the fixed lambrequins. This gives the hall a luxury. Lambrequins can be made of peroxides of lightweight fabric, which will not burden the construction, but, on the contrary, will give the interior a lightness. The classic option - not the only one to decorate the living room in the Greek style. In this room would be appropriate Roman and roll options, fit the bamboo blinds and products from the mat.

When making windows with Greek curtains, it is important to ensure the symmetry of all the details. Curtain barrettes or brushes are used to fasten the canvas to the rail.

  • Kitchen. In the kitchen space window openings, as a rule, are decorated with Greek-Roman or roller blinds, which is also very characteristic of the Greek style.Often this is a bright palette: pastel colors, cream, shades of sand. The cuisine is the exception of the Greek interior, where you can retreat from the correct geometry. Here there are soft divorces, floral motifs in the ornament.

If you chose a classic Greek curtain for the kitchen, it can be supplemented with pelmet or cords.

  • Bedroom. The main task of the curtains in the bedroom is to close the face of the sleeping person from the bright sunlight, while at the same time fresh air should flow into the room. Therefore, the Greek curtains are made of dense materials of natural origin, for example, bleached flax and cotton. Here in the interior of the best option would be the classic sliding curtains, not weighted with a lambrequin.
  • Double-sided curtains will fit perfectly into the interior, in which on the one hand one color is placed, and on the other - contrasting. In this case, the most spectacular option for the bedroom will be a tandem of black, traditionally well protected from the sun's rays, and elite gold, which will give a special style. The windows of the bedrooms are also well protected by the Greco-Roman models.
