Linen curtains

 Linen curtains

Various environmental topics are now at the peak of popularity. After long years of neglect, the linen material for window decoration is back. Designers again remembered him, and it turned out that he fits perfectly into many stylistics.

Should I hang?

Linen curtains require caution when choosing, but this does not mean that it is worth removing them from the list of options under consideration. On the contrary, besides the fact that curtains made of natural flax have a lot of advantages, they can also be selected for any room.

If we compare the pros and cons, the advantage in favor of advantages will be obvious. Linen curtains have only three drawbacks: the high price, difficulties in ironing and the fact that flax can fade in the sun, so these curtains are advised to sew on a lining.

If we talk about the pros, you can bring a whole list.

  • Flax by itself is hypoallergenic material, which is very important when choosing a window design.
  • This is a very durable material. Curtains made of this fabric will last a long time.
  • Even light flax can be called non-marking matter. Dirt as if slipping from linen panels. It is also very easy to wash; washing is possible even in a washing machine using ordinary powder (but with gentle properties).
  • Linen curtains or curtains can be used in the design of any room and almost any style.
  • Flax drapes very easily and keeps its shape well. This opens up a lot of opportunities to create different curtains.
  • Linen curtains do not electrify.
  • Matter has thermostatic properties, giving coolness to the room in the summer and perfectly protecting from drafts in the winter.
  • Material by itself disinfects and disinfects the air in the room.

However, you can often encounter unscrupulous sellers, issuing artificial flax for natural. Verify the authenticity of the material is very simple. It is enough to set fire to a small strip of fabric about half a centimeter wide and see what remains of it. If only ashes - the fabric is real; if ashes and lumps - they are trying to deceive you.

Colors

The choice of different colors is huge. In particular, when painting flax, they use mostly muted low-key tones, such as beige, dark green, or khaki. The curtains of olive shade are very popular because they are perfectly suited to the topic of ecology that is relevant at the moment. You will not find bright orange or curtains in a shade of turquoise, but muted blue - not uncommon, especially when you make bedrooms.

Most people opt for light linen drapes. They help give the room a sense of airiness, spaciousness, lightness. White, light gray, light beige curtains are modern classics. They are suitable for absolutely any room, including the design of the kitchen.

Linen curtains or patterned curtains have also won the hearts of the public thanks to a large selection of design solutions. On linen cloth, both large printed patterns and small ones look good.

Tulle, made of linen, is also often complemented by embroidery, made in the same color with the main curtain. In particular, white, light gray, and beige appear as primary colors for the veil.

Sometimes you can find a combination of two colors, for example, if you want to combine curtains with furniture in the color of wenge or walnut. There are no strict rules on which colors to use - similar or contrasting, but one thing remains the same: shades should be muted, restrained, as natural as possible. The combinations of white and olive or khaki, white and muted blue, turquoise and beige look beautiful and relevant.

Correct length

It is difficult to say which length is optimal for these curtains. Linen curtains or horizontal curtains up to the window sill are commonly used for the kitchen. For living rooms choose the length from floor to ceiling. Do not buy curtains with a height of 2 meters, this length is not sufficient. The curtains must “rest” on some horizontal surface: a window sill, a table, a radiator, a floor.

Linen curtains should not be allowed to touch the floor or, worse, spread over it. In this case, the curtains will look sloppy, ridiculous, inappropriate. Simple linen fabric requires the same simplicity of design, so that such complications only spoil everything.

Styles

As mentioned above, linen curtains fit perfectly in almost any interior. Exceptions are the stylistics in which the deliberately emphasized richness of decoration, for example, Baroque or Art Deco. However, for the classic style of such curtains to pick up is quite possible if done with caution.

One of the best styles for choosing linen curtains is Scandinavian. It is in itself based on an exaggerated idea of simplicity, so flax is an ideal choice for such premises. True, the fabric with a pattern can not be used here. Natural colors such as gray or beige look best.

Folklore style is another excellent version of the style, which "loves" linen frame for windows. It does not matter in what style the room is designed - in Russian style, Mexican, Georgian - painted linen curtains, models with embroidery or even decorated in batik technique will still suit him perfectly.

Linen curtains in rustic style will also look quite appropriate. For example, the curtain of linen arch, going to the middle of the window - a classic option for the design of the kitchen in the style of Country. If it is also made of fabric with a pattern (for example, in a cage or with a floral pattern), it turns out to completely recreate the summer summer atmosphere in the room.

For marine interior, flax draperies are also very often chosen. In this case, the appropriate fabric, texture close to the burlap. This is the so-called rough, unprocessed flax. Usually, such a fabric is not even painted, leaving a light gray, but sometimes it is whitened and it gets a beautiful shade of ivory.

In different rooms

Linen curtains on the windows will give any room the comfort and atmosphere of simple chic. In particular, this property of matter is often used for living. Choosing curtains in the hall, the owners always strive to make the room impressed the guests. Linen curtains, despite the apparent modesty perfectly perform this task. The use of natural materials always looks expensive and stylish.

When choosing linen curtains for the bedroom, they often stop at floor-length options. Shortened curtain models are practically not used in this case. Linen curtains perfectly protect the room from street noise, and also allow you to even out the temperature background in the room.

Covering the radiator, they cool the air slightly before pumping it into the room; also drapes prevent drafts. Such an atmosphere in the bedroom favors a good sound sleep.

Linen curtains of medium length to the kitchen - a classic of the genre. Housewives often make a choice in favor of this option, because flax is perfectly washable, does not absorb odors, and also looks harmonious. Roman curtains are often made of linen for the kitchen, because they are more practical than regular sliding curtains.

Linen curtains are also used in the nursery, although they mainly perform a decorative function. Lightweight curtains of bleached linen suitable for both boys and girls.

How to choose?

Many people bought linen curtains for their rooms. Their feedback on the experience of such a purchase is very informative. In general, most agree on the following points.

  • Habitual linen curtains with lace and hemstones are, rather, a relic of the past, but they perfectly complement the interior of the room, decorated in the folk style. If you want to use lace in a rustic interior, you should not make out the curtains themselves, it is better to make only lace for curtains for laces or frame lace edges.
  • Linen drapes with the addition of viscose do not crumple, so that they are most suitable as curtains for the kitchen.
  • Linen curtains made of artificial material are not suitable for window decoration in the bedroom. Imitation, even very good, does not possess sufficiently the same qualities as natural material.
  • When designing curtains, they can be made from two different materials at the same time. Cotton goes well with flax, while due to the difference in textures such curtains look pretty impressive.
  • It is important that the general patterns of the room and curtains resonate. For example, choosing flax in a flower, you need to add curtains with decorative textiles with floral print, for example, a veil.
  • Thin flax looks very impressive if deliberately coarse fabric texture is used. For example, the mat will be perfectly combined with marine or Scandinavian themes. The striped texture does not require any additional decoration, since it is in itself quite interesting and original.

How to hang?

At the moment, two kinds of different ways of attaching linen curtains are popular: on the curtain tape and on the grommet.

The curtains on the curtain tape look very modest and unassuming, while the models on the grommets attract the eye. If you plan to focus on the design of the window, then the option with eyelets is just for you.

Please note that this type of curtain fastening, such as curtain tape, is used in folklore, Scandinavian, Loft, Provence, Eco-style. Grommets should be used to decorate a room in a rustic style. This division is extremely conditional and cannot serve as a rule, however, most often, in order to fix linen curtains, it is the curtain ribbons that are used.

It should also be noted that it is impossible to hang linen curtains together with lambrequins or a gang, this contradicts the very concept of simplicity. The less decorative elements that will be used with linen curtains, the better. Sometimes even pickups are superfluous.

How to pat and starch?

Ironing linen curtains - a real test for the hostess. It takes a lot of effort and time.

To begin with, dry the curtain in suspense. Immediately after washing, removing the curtains from the drum of the washing machine, simply hang the curtains on the eaves and leave them for several hours until the fabric is slightly damp.

If you are lucky, the fabric will dry with almost no folds, and ironing it will be quite easy.

Preheat the iron to maximum temperature. Smooth the fabric until it is completely dry, moving gradually from the bottom edge of the curtain to the top. Remember that you should not steam curtains of flax, because it still does not give any tangible result. It is better to spend a little more time and iron them properly. The curtains of a mixture of flax and viscose will be especially "grateful": mash out after you smooth it out - a rather difficult task.

Linen curtains are usually quite thick, but if the choice was made in favor of thin curtains, they need to starch.

For processing curtains should use a solution of medium intensity, which is prepared as follows.

  • A tablespoon of starch with a hill must be diluted in a liter of warm water.
  • Heat the solution, stirring, and wait until there are no lumps left. Boil.
  • Then cool and dilute at the rate of 1 liter of solution per 10 l of water. Rinse the curtains in the starch solution, squeeze and hang them to dry.
  • Then repeat all the same steps that were described for the usual ironing.

Options in the interior

Option dining room, decorated in a classic style. The curtains of natural color perfectly complement the interior, at the same time adding peace of mind and giving the whole composition a finished look.

Translucent two-color curtains from flax for the bedroom are made in various techniques: The outer bright panels are mounted directly on the tubular cornice, and the inner ones - on the rings. This technique allowed to visually add a little height to the room.

Portieres on eyelets are an excellent option for window decoration in a Scandinavian interior. They look very neat and at the same time expensive, demonstrating the excellent taste of the owners.

Here is a Provence room, complete with two-color curtains. Notice how the colors of the curtains echo the overall decoration of the interior.Floral motifs act as a binder.

Characteristic for a rustic-style drawing looks great on linen curtains, allowing you to create a provincial-naive atmosphere in the kitchen. Such decisions add to the comfort of the rooms and always warm memories of childhood.

Muted blue combined with white creates a very fresh duet. In such a room to breathe easily. The curtains, reaching almost to the floor, perfectly frame the large window of this living room. The double cornice of a contrasting color acts as an element of decoration, visually balancing the proportions of the entire window space.

Roman curtains look no worse than the classic sliding. The correct selection of color solutions and patterns shown in the photo, gives an interesting idea for the windows in the living room.
