Foam child seats

Children's furniture is a special category of goods, prices for which are often quite high. However, if parents are reserved for patience, show their talents, connect imagination, then they can easily make children's seats with their own hands with minimal financial costs.

One of the simple versions, but very popular, original and comfortable is the bag chair, which can be made from scrap materials. Another option - the manufacture of wooden frame, which is sheathed with foam rubber and covered with cloth.

Original and comfortable child seats can be made even from scrap materials, which probably will be at home for everyone. For example, a chair can be “assembled” from large sheets of foam rubber, onto which covers can be sewn of beautiful bright material. Also, a child seat can be built from seat mats and cushions from old chairs - it is enough to sew new covers on them from any material, and then sew the details in the shape of a chair.

Let us consider in more detail the most interesting options for children's chairs, which can be made independently at home.

Upholstered

To build a child seat from foam rubber, you will need to perform the following steps:

  1. Creating a frame made of wood;
  2. Covering it with foam material;
  3. Weaving fabric.

Suitable materials for the manufacture of the frame are plywood or particleboard. They are light enough and at the same time durable for the design of children's furniture.

To create the frame of the future chair is quite simple:

  • First we need to to form a semicircle of chipboard sheets, which will be the future base seat. At right angles to the base, we attach three long sticks (approximately 40 cm each) with the help of screws, on which we will install the backrest frame of the product.
  • Next you need cut from plywood front struts. We measure the exact size of the semicircular part, after which it will be necessary to cut two rectangular pieces from hardboard. In length, they should be exactly the same as long bars, and in width - as half the length of the semicircular part of the frame.
  • It only remains attach all parts of the frame to the bars with screws and a drill.
  • When the frame of the product is ready, you need to go to the next step - covering it with foam rubber. To cover the sides of the chair, the foam should be thinner, but for the backrest and seat mats - thick enough.
  • You need to glue the foam with a special glue, often referred to as “foam rubber”, it contains substances such as polyurethane and neoprene. The consistency of this glue is quite viscous, so it does not soak the entire layer of foam rubber, which is very important, because after drying the impregnated layer becomes very hard and easily loses its shape.

It is very convenient to cut the foam rubber with a sharp knife, a stationery or a knife that is designed for cutting linoleum is ideal for this purpose.

  • Sheathe the resulting chair can be a normal furniture fabric or kozhzam. The advantage of the latter is that it is much easier to take care of it, it will be easy enough to wash off any dirt, but the fabric materials are more easily soiled and their cleaning will not be so simple.

If you wish, you can also do your own bracket with armrests for the chair.

Frameless

The main advantages of the frameless chair with foam filling are its mobility, maximum safety and high comfort. Such furniture for a child can also become an interesting element of the game.

Make frameless armchair with their own hands is not difficult. The main skill that will be useful to you is the skill of sewing. In fact, bean bags are a cover of their fabric, into which a special filler is placed. Such furniture easily adapts to the shape of the body of the baby who sits on it.

For the manufacture of this furniture you need to prepare the following materials and tools:

  • Millimeter paper for the pattern;
  • The material from which the inner bag will be made. It can be natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic. The length of the fabric depends on the size of the chair. The universal size of such furniture is 90x120 cm, for this you will need 2.5-3 m of fabric (the roll width must be at least 120 cm);
  • The material from which the outer cover will be made. The length of the fabric should be the same as for the inner bag. Choose durable natural materials. The coloring should be bright and harmoniously combined with the rest of the interior of the nursery;
  • Zipperswhose length should be from 300 to 1000 mm. The zipper of the outer cover can also be replaced with a velcro. Thanks to the clasp, the top case can be removed and washed;
  • Pencil, chalk, scissors, ruler and tape measure;
  • Sturdy strings for seams;
  • Synthetic filler. This can be as a professional polystyrene foam filler (in the form of very small light balls, which will need about three hundred liters), and as inexpensive material as foam rubber, which probably many will find at home.
  • Sewing machine.

Stages of work:

  1. We transfer the provided pattern to graph paper in the real size and cut it;
  2. We transfer the pattern to the fabric and cut out the elements for sewing the inner and outer bag;
  3. Manually sew the parts with a basting stitch, while at the same time it is necessary to immediately sew zippers into each case;
  4. On a sewing machine, you must stitch all basting stitches with a strong thread;
  5. The bag must be unscrewed, after which you can begin to fill.

Visually the process of making a frameless chair, see the following video.

It’s safer and easiest at home to use, as a filler, the foam rubber that we are used to.Since during the procedure of filling the bag with polystyrene foam, a certain number of balls can be scattered, in which case they can be collected with a vacuum cleaner. And children are best asked to wait in another room (in order to avoid penetration of polystyrene filler in the airways).

The children's soft armchair is a universal piece of interior that will make the baby’s room much cozier and more interesting, especially if you create this furniture with your own hands. You can turn on the fantasy and sew a chair cover in the form of your child’s favorite fairy-tale character or in the form of funny animals. The most important thing is that it is necessary to carry out all stages of the work very carefully and scrupulously, then you will certainly get an excellent result that will delight both you and the baby.

The main advantages of the furniture made by own hands lies in its convenience, originality (because the second such thing you will not find anywhere else),and also in the minimum financial expenses.
