Do-it-yourself chair restoration

Many things lose their attractive appearance over time, so they need to be updated. You can make some efforts to restore the furniture and give it an amazing look. Especially often people rework old chairs. There are many ways to restore them.

Kinds

To independently update the old chair, you need to decide on the type of restoration. There are several ways to help restore outdated furniture. The following methods can be applied to update wood products or chipboard surfaces:

  • Decoupage - is the ability to decorate furniture by gluing some motifs or pictures cut out of paper on it. To preserve the updated surface of the object, use a special varnish that protects the paper from external influences. Decoupage allows you to choose an interesting pattern and transfer it to old furniture, thereby updating the interior.
  • Adhesive tape or film helps to renew old furniture without much effort.Decorative self-adhesive film can have a design that imitates natural stone, wood, leather and ceramics. She is not afraid of water, temperature changes and direct sunlight. With it, you can completely transform the faded chair.
  • Art painting - is a way to decorate objects with different colors. There are several types of artistic painting: Khokhloma, Zhostovo, Gzhel and Mezen painting. But for the restoration of this method requires skill and attentiveness.
  • Craquelure - the technique of creating a visually aged tree. Cracks form on the surface through which the main tone is visible. To get this result, use a special plaster, varnish or paint.

The technique itself does not require serious preparation and accuracy of application.

  • Painting - the easiest type of restoration, for which you only need to clean the product well. Paintwork will retain the attractiveness of the chair for a long time.
  • Lamination - a method that uses decorated paper, which is glued to the surface of the chair using a synthetic molten resin.
  • Veneering - represents the renewal of furniture with the help of a thin layer of wood, which is glued to the surface with a single or two-component composition. And to give the veneer aesthetics, you can cover it with varnish or wax.

In addition to updating the aesthetic appearance of the chair, sometimes it may require more serious intervention - it may be necessary to replace or repair the broken part of the structure. In some cases, you only need to restore the connecting parts, and in others - completely replace the part.

To restore a wooden or metal chair, you may need to replace the old upholstery. For this you need to prepare materials that will help restore the product. Upholstery requires accuracy and precision in combination with the possession of tools.

How to independently disassemble?

It is not difficult to disassemble the chair with your own hands, because its design is known to almost everyone. First you need to unscrew the back, and then the legs. And collect the product in reverse order, so that all the grooves took their places. In case the highchair is fixed with glued spikes, the attachment points are moistened with hot water or doused with steam from the steam generator.

If there are cracks on the wooden structure, they are filled with a mixture consisting of glue and sawdust or glued and clamped until they are fully fixed. In the case of damage to spike mounts, the old plugs are replaced, and the bong joints are glued. To do this, make a small hole, pour glue into it and wait until it dries.

If the old chair staggers, it is necessary to remove the legs from the special grooves and wedge their upper parts. Due to this, they increase and better keep in grooves.

Updating the highchair occurs on the same principle as an adult, but sometimes it needs to replace the hinges or the swivel mechanism. Usually children's designs consist of many parts that are designed to secure the position of the child. For greater strength, all connecting points need to be glued.

To disassemble the folding chair, it is enough to remove the axial pins that connect the back and seat pad, and then remove the seat. Metal-based structures are easier to disassemble - you need to unscrew the seat and the soft part of the backrest.

If the seat of the chair is installed on the spring unit, it must be replaced with new springs. The entire unit for this is not necessary to remove.

The recovery process is phased

After dismantling the structure and restoring damaged parts, it is necessary to remove the old paintwork. After this begins the main stage of restoration.

First, a primer is applied to the cleaned surface of the chair, which completely coincides with the color of the product. After waiting for complete drying, the soil is cleaned with sandpaper to obtain a thin layer of coating. After that, the product is coated with paint or varnish, waiting for it to dry and put another layer.

Each material is painted in a special way. For example, an anti-corrosion agent is first applied to the metal frame, and after it is fully dried, it is coated with its primary color. Transparent varnish is applied in several stages, and if a coloring composition is used, it is better to resort to enamel on metal.

The wooden frame is first treated with wax, carefully distributing it in all areas. Instead of wax, you can use an oil primer, which is applied with a brush. Then the product is covered with several layers of acrylic paint. These recovery steps allow you to quickly and easily update the chair without using special protective masks and gloves.

It is extremely undesirable to paint plastic chairs, since plasticity is peculiar to bending, and this will lead to crackling and peeling of the paint. Therefore, for them priority to sew covers or pillows.

The last stage of the update consists of creating a beautiful upholstery. After removing the old upholstery, the base of the seat is cut out of the foam cushion, which is then fixed to the surface with glue. For additional fixation, you can use clips. Well pulling the fabric around the seat, its bottom is secured with furniture clips. Depending on personal preferences, the fabric may have a bright pattern or no pattern at all.

To redo the seat with springs, first fix the wadding, and then a layer of foam sheet. The fabric is fastened on the same principle as with a single layer of foam rubber, but it is tensioned with a large emphasis to smooth the spring relief.

Many people think about which paint is better to paint in order to preserve the effect for a long time. For wooden products, you can use the stain or paintwork, and for iron structures - enamel, specially designed for metal.

Viennese

To repair the Viennese chairs yourself, you first need to assess their overall condition. The amount of damage may depend on the operating conditions.

The most important damage that can be assessed at home is instability. This is due to the weakening of spiked joints. To bring the product to a normal state, it is necessary to increase the size of the spike, put the seals on the side bars and replace the power bars. After that, paintwork is replaced and the seat is restored.

To restore an outdated design, you need to prepare basic materials and tools. To work, you need to get a hammer, a furniture stapler, a self-tapping screw, paints, solvents, brushes, glue, scissors, cloth and emery paper.

The update process begins with the cleaning of all surfaces of the product from dirt and dust. After this begins the analysis of the chair. First, remove the seat and back, which are usually kept on the screws. Then the remaining parts are removed step by step. It is important to check the strength of all compounds. If any place of attachment keeps bad, then it should not be disassembled.

Disassembled elements must be replaced immediately so that no errors occur during the assembly process. All parts are cleaned with sandpaper to thoroughly clean them from old varnish. This is necessary in order to repaint the furniture, a new layer lay on the chair perfectly.

Next, be sure to examine the places of gluing elements. The top of the legs, which are mounted in the slots, you need to wrap several layers of bandage, missed each layer with glue. If the leg is very loose, then a hole is made in the end, into which a small wedge is then driven in. This will increase the width of the butt, and the leg will firmly hold in the groove.

In case of slanted structures with a weakened seam, an opening must be made on the inner side, and an adhesive is inserted into it with the help of a syringe. You can also resort to matches, smeared in glue, and when assembling the chair to insert them into the nest. In this case, the ends should be fitted with great precision so that there is no gap between them and the tsargs.

The assembly of the structure begins with the complete sizing of all spiked joints. Excess glue must be removed with a napkin. The product dries for about a day, and for maximum fixation it is necessary to put someheavy object.

To update the seat, you need to get rid of worn upholstery and eliminate all the shortcomings of the surface. If you need to change the foam rubber, then on the new foam sheet you need to draw the markup and cut the part. The fabric, which will be seated seat, should be more than the resulting seat. It is placed close to the surface and secured from the back with clips.

The chair itself can be decorated in the style of Provence. To do this, all the wooden parts are painted, and after drying are processed with a grinding machine.

To fix the effect, you need to cover the structure with varnish.

Update details

You can decorate the chair in various ways. Any materials can go to the course: paper, fabric, laces, paints, napkins, etc. Everything depends on the master's imagination and on the level of his skill. Naturally, if a person does not know how to work with complicated equipment, then it is not worth resorting to it. We need to start with something more understandable.

Using sisal

For this method, you can use both wooden and metal frame. For work, you will need a large ball of sisal rope, thick upholstery fabric such as velvet, a stapler, superglue, scissors, nails, hammer, pencil and measuring tape.

To begin repairs you need to remove the old upholstery from the seat and back. Then sisal wrapped parts back, smoothly moving on the legs. This should be done in such a way that the rope fits the detail tightly and each subsequent row closely adjoins the previous one. Fix material need glue.

After finishing the winding of all elements, you need to create a decoration on the back. For this, a rope of several layers in 2-3 rows is wound, first between the upper and lower rails, and then between the side rails.

Having made the pattern of new upholstery, you need to fix it on the seat. For this, fine nails or a stapler are suitable.

Wool yarn

To resort to this option, you need a design on a metal frame with mesh back and seat. For work it is necessary to prepare scissors, multicolored wool yarn, crochet hook, wooden plank, screwdriver and screws.

In this case, the grid plays the role of a canvas, so double threads should be passed through it diagonally. In addition, each row may have a different color. You can use two contrasting colors or a few shades close in tone.

Strengthen the damaged mesh can be a few stitches of yarn. After you need to cut the bar, which will repeat the shape of the seat, and fasten it with cogs.

Decoupage of sewing patterns

This option is well suited for antique wood products with a hard seat. For work you will need patterns from magazines, glue, brush, acrylic lacquer, scissors, cloth, threads and a needle.

First, one section of the chair is treated and a piece of pattern is attached on top. To prevent it from forming bubbles, take a piece of cloth and gently smooth the pattern, starting from the middle. The rest of the structure is decorated in the same way. And for reliable fixation after drying, it must be coated with acrylic varnish.

To soften the seat, you can sew a pillow yourself or buy a ready-made biscuit.

This method is interesting because in addition to the patterns, wallpaper, cards and other newspaper clippings are suitable for it.

Chebbi chic

This technique is designed to age furniture. It is quite simple and requires a minimum of skills. To get an antique product, you will need paints of delicate bed tones. It is possible to use white, pink, cream and pistachio paint.

If the chair has soft parts, then they should be covered with a film before work. After that, all wooden elements must be painted in a flashy color, and after full drying, rub them with paraffin. Then the same parts need to be painted with light paint, preferably in two layers. Completely dry the product is scraped off with an emery paper to create scuffs and the effect of antiquity.

Decorate the resulting design can be painted, decoupage from napkins or splashes of paint. At the end of the work all the elements need to be coated with acrylic varnish.

Assembly and hauling

Having updated the frame of the chair and having drawn the soft parts upholstered, it remains only to assemble the product. The assembly is carried out according to the same scenario as the analysis. The legs and back are inserted into the same sockets, where they stood before the repair. Plywood is attached to the frame either with glue or with paper clips.

After completing the restoration, you can get a unique object from old and dull furniture. You can simply paint the faded product in a delicate color, or you can resort to a more sophisticated update technique.

To drag the old upholstery design, you need to measure all the soft parts and calculate the amount of the desired fabric. It must be strong enough to withstand daily operation.

The pattern is made on a dense cardboard, encircling the old upholstery fabric. The resulting pattern is transferred to a new fabric, then cut out the part. The same is done with foam. Having prepared all the details, you can proceed to the waist. First, you need to glue the foam to the seat, then attach a cloth to it, bending the edges inward. You can fix it on the glue and small nails. At the same time the fabric should be tightly stretched on the seat.

The backrest and armrests are fitted on the same principle.

In this process, the restoration of the old chair in a new way at home with their own hands finished. To create a more attractive and expensive piece of furniture, instead of dense textiles, you can use dermantine, natural leather, as well as a variety of decor.
