Making wooden doors with your own hands

The final touch in the design of modern design is the choice of beautiful and presentable doors. They should be not only the original addition of housing, but also be characterized by durability, durability. Therefore, in recent years, most owners prefer to purchase input structures made of such material as wood.

Doors made of solid wood, are characterized by excellent appearance, have excellent sound and heat insulation, resistant to various mechanical influences. In addition, such structures harmoniously fit into the overall interior of both city apartments and private houses.

If you go back a little into the past, you can see that the manufacture of wooden doors with their own hands enjoyed great popularity. Practically in all houses massive oak doors were installed, indicating the level of income, tastes and social status of the owners.Although time and fashion do not stand still, they are constantly changing, yet the demand for such structures has remained unchanged.

To date, in the manufacture of doors using different wood species, use the original methods of processing and decoration. Independent production of such products requires a basic knowledge of joinery, therefore, almost everyone can do it.

Manufacturing technology

The production process of entrance and interior doors takes a lot of time and effort, but it pleases the result. That the design from the array served long and reliably, required to adhere to a specific production technology, consisting of:

  • Preparation material. First, the boards should be treated with a grinder and polished with a grinder. It is worth noting that only the voluminous wood surfaces are polished, and as for the ends, they are not subject to additional processing, since they are formed and ready to work even in the milling process.
  • Milling To perform these works, you will need a set of shaped cutters and a special manual machine for finishing wood. Thanks to these tools, the ends of the boards will get a beautiful view, and the corners of the blanks will be slightly rounded. When performing milling it is important to pay attention to the thickness and width of the array, so you need to properly select the size of the nozzles. As a rule, for processing of boards use a mill of 16 mm, depth of a groove can differ, but not exceed 20 mm. It is chosen strictly in the center of the blanks.
  • End cuts. Works are performed by a manual circular saw. All four ends of the board are adjusted to an angle of 45 degrees. In this process, it is important to ensure that the angle and length of the blanks are clear. To check the result it is recommended to use a protractor. As for the length of the material, the dimensions of the rack for standard doors should be 2 meters, and the length of the lower and upper inserts fully corresponds to the width of the surface. In the case when it is planned to manufacture doors with a width of 70 cm, then all the details of the entrance structure should also be equal to 70 cm.
  • Cutting Chipboard. Often this stage of work is not performed if the material is purchased in finished form. When blanks are made with your own hands, their dimensions should be calculated using a special formula: from the width of the door surface, count the dimensions of the two prepared boards and add to them two groove depths. For doors of standard sizes, the width calculations will look like this: 700- (150 × 2) + (20 × 2) = 440 mm, and the length of the inserts will be 2000- (150 × 2) + (20 × 2) = 1740 mm.
  • Pre-assembly. On sheets of chipboard cause board. It is worth noting that in such works all the details are simply connected and in no way glued. When all the elements will be connected and there will be no deviations in the geometry or gaps, you can install mechanical fasteners. For this, holes are made, they will be located at the bottom and top of the canvas, after which the final assembly is made.

To the above, it is also worth adding a frame of canopies and a place under the handles. This is best done at the initial stages of the door assembly, since after covering their surface with a decorative layer, scratches or deformations are possible.

In addition, if in advance to perform a tie-in, then at the end of manufacture and installation will only install fittings.

Materials and tools

Before doing independent manufacturing of products, it will be necessary to prepare appropriate tools and high-quality blanks, as well as apply maximum knowledge and effort, since the final result of the work will depend on these indicators. From the tools you will need:

  • Machine or milling machine. They are useful for the initial processing of boards, the creation of groove connections and giving all elements of the door a profile look.
  • Circular saw with manual gear. It is used in cutting wood.
  • Bulgarian with a grinding nozzle. Thanks to it, the surface of solid wood will be smooth and ready to use. Such a nozzle can also be installed on a drill, but in a duet with a grinder, it works more efficiently.
  • Screwdriver. Used when installing the door frame.
  • Traditional set of measuring and carpentry tools. It can be a tape measure, chisel, hammer and mallet.

As for the material itself, it is represented by the following list:

  • Board. Chopped and planed dry wood from pine or oak. For the manufacture of one standard door you need 6 meters of board with dimensions 40 × 100mm. When buying ready-made blanks, you need to pay attention to the fact that the length of the board was longer, because its part will be cut to the ends.
  • Laminated chipboard or plywood sheets. They are used for internal insertion of the canvas. It is very important that they fully match the color of future doors, otherwise a sharp transition in contrast is possible. If, however, the inserts are slightly different from the shade of the tree, they can be covered with special finishing paints.

In addition to the main raw material, for the manufacture of doors, you will also need auxiliary elements, namely paint and varnish products, PVA glue.

How to choose boards?

As a rule, boards are used for the production of all joinery, which are sawn timber no more than 100 mm thick and up to 200 mm wide. Today there are the following types of boards:

  • Edged. Has the edges, perpendicular sawn to the planes.
  • Uncut Its edges are partially sawn or not sawn.
  • One-side edging. Board in which only one edge is sawn.

For the production of doors, mostly unedged boards of 30 and 50 mm are used. To make the product durable, it is recommended to choose a workpiece with a thickness of 25 mm. Raw materials must be of high quality and without rot. Before buying the material, it is advisable to pre-outline the future of the product in the drawing.

On the outer part of the door pick boards without stains, knots and other visible defects. Their surface should be smooth and even.On the sides of the structure will be able to approach the boards and worse, but without knots. The back wall, shelves and bottom of the doors are made of wood of the worst quality. When buying a material, it is recommended to cut the core, if there are cracks in it, the boards are not suitable for carpentry work.

How to make and install yourself: step by step instructions

In order to make a wooden door yourself, you will need to choose the right material and the appropriate tool, as well as calculate all sizes. If the product will serve as the entrance to the housing, then the right choice will be a thick door. A simple but warmed construction model will protect the house from cold air currents and drafts.

It is recommended to make a warm door for rooms with balconies. After all the blanks are ready and processed, they are assembled into one canvas, securely fastened and proceed to installation work.

Door installation can be done in various ways, depending on the type of construction. For example, the installation of swing models is different from the insertion of sliding products. The same goes for entrance and interior doors. The process of their manufacture and fastening is almost the same, but there is a difference - for the input structures a threshold is required. In addition, a wooden box is surely attached to the front door.

Installation work consists of the following steps:

  • Fastening the doorway. The box is fixed with wooden wedges. To ensure that the door is properly positioned, its position is checked at the building level. The side rails set vertically, and the threshold and upper jumper horizontally. After the marks are set on the opening, the box is removed for drilling holes for fasteners.
  • Fixing the box. The dowels are hammered into the holes, the screws are inserted and tightened along all diagonals.
  • Fasten the loop. The distance between them should be at least 20 cm. After this, the construction is considered finished, it is hung on the hinges and fastened securely. The master will only have to put the canvas in the box and secure.

Making a cashing

The main element in the decoration of doors are slopes. They not only perform an aesthetic function, but also warm the structure well. Slopes are installed in several ways, but regardless of the chosen technique, it is important that they are securely fastened.Finishing material is installed both with a drill and fixed with plaster.

Often the door slopes revetted with plastic, wood panels, laminate or plasterboard. All of the above materials are well suited for entrance and interior design. To keep the door warm and reliable, no voids should be allowed when installing slopes. Therefore, initially put a layer of putty and then later on the surface mounted wooden parts.

The life of the doors, their practicality and resistance to mechanical damage depends on the type of finish. Today, the following materials are used for facing the canvas:

  • Drywall Allows you to hide all the visible flaws of wood, much cheaper putty, therefore, is considered an economical option for decorating the frame base.
  • Plaster. It is used to trim the door slopes. The mortar is applied to the work surface and then decorated with its basic material.
  • Panels made of plastic. This type of design looks beautiful in houses made of log. In addition, the plastic originally stands out against the background of wooden products, is durable and reliable.

How to strengthen?

Sooner or later, the performance of wooden doors begin to deteriorate. The most common cause of this may be manufacture of products from low-quality materials or violation of technological conditions during installation. Loops and shoals are loosened over time, and various types of defects appear on the canvas. To solve this problem, it is not necessary to acquire a new door, it is enough to reinforce the old structure.

Input products can simply be strengthened with metal. For example, an overlay of steel with a thickness of at least 3 mm is packed around the keyhole, it will block the keyhole and will provide reliable protection against burglary.

To completely transform the canvas, can be upholstered with 1.5 mm steel sheet. The only thing that in this case is worth paying attention to is the hinge reinforcement, since under the influence of the weight of the metal the construction will squeeze and there will be problems with opening / closing the door. For the strength of the input products, the installation of steel strips along the entire perimeter of the surface is also used; they are fixed with a layer of mineral wool and decorated with a beautiful material.

Processing and decorating options

The most interesting point in the independent production of doors is their decoration. To do this, they apply both the finishing of a wooden leaf with a laminate and simply put veneer or paint on the surface of the door at home.

Before finishing the fabric with paints and varnishes, you will need to prepare special painting equipment in the form of a spray gun and compressor. In addition, deaf solid wood doors are recommended to be additionally decorated with glass inserts. Entrance structures are also often decorated with various patterns and carvings.

How to seal the gap?

During operation, the doors of the array begin to crack, which leads to the formation of cracks on the canvas. To remedy this situation, you need to attach metal corners to the joints of the bars or glue the slats. They are placed in the cracks, and after the glue has completely dried, the surface is cleaned and polished. If small cracks appeared on the door, they can be easily repaired with a spatula and putty on wood. Sometimes designs from the front and seamy side sheathe veneer or sheets of hardboard.

Surface finish door allows you to hide visible flaws and is considered an original decoration. After the protective sheets are nailed to the canvas, they are painted with paint in several layers and well shade the surface.

It is worth paying attention to the fact that the material for interior and exterior doors is different. Exterior models are usually covered with waterproof varnishes. They are applied on a pre-primed surface.

Handmade models in the interior of the house

It is necessary to choose entrance or interroom doors taking into account the general interior of housing that they harmoniously fit into color scale and style of registration. For country houses are well suited massive designs of wood, decorated with carvings. If the housing is built from natural materials, then the entrance doors should correspond to its subject. The models covered with varnish look beautiful, they completely emphasize the natural beauty of the tree.

As for interior models, now standard fabrics in white and black colors, decorated with inset glass, are in fashion. Originally also look wooden products in the color of the tree, decorated with stones and paintings.
