Double doors

 Double doors

Double-wing interior doors look great and turn an ordinary room into an elegant room or living room. Their installation does not require any special expenses, and the advantages of the application are compensated by the few difficulties that arise during the selection and installation process.

What it is?

In the design of these doors there are two doors in one door frame. This option is convenient for doorways, the width of which is more than one meter, and therefore they cannot be closed by a single door leaf. Most often, such internal openings are left to enter the hall or the living room to emphasize the ceremonial purpose of the room, so the double doors require special appeal and full compliance with the overall style decision of the interior.

Double doors have another name.They are called bisexual due to the fact that in sliding structures, for example, at the door-compartment, there are no shutters in the usual meaning of the word, they open due to sliding in guides fixed to the floor.

An interesting fact is that almost any door panels can be set as double.

In this case, combinations can be very diverse:

  • Equal in size and symmetrical in pattern double canvases;
  • Equal in size, but asymmetrical canvases, made in the same color scheme;
  • Mirror opposite doors in the picture;
  • One of the canvases can be much wider than the other, the ratio is 1 to 4, with both sashes identical in pattern and color scheme.

In the case of using different widths of canvases, one of them (usually the one that is narrower) is usually fixed in the opening, opening only if necessary. This is done by bolts that do not allow the narrow sash to swing open when the wide half of the door is opened.

Kinds

Double doors can be divided into several types depending on the type of opening:

  • Swing doorswhich need a lot of free space for opening. Such doors look very pompous when decorating the entrance to a large room. Among them, there are doors with an arch, which require high ceilings and are particularly aristocratic.
  • Slidingopening the passage horizontally due to slip. Such designs are ideal for small apartments, not using the nearby space and moving only along the bearing rail, which looks like a rail with grooves. There are sliding doors, the movement of which occurs along the surface of the walls and cassette doors, also called compartment doors, which, when opened, “hide” inside the wall partition. Not so long ago, shoji doors, which are a Japanese variation of sliding doors, became popular.
  • Pendulum doorsthat can open in both directions: in the inside of the room, and out. Most often they are placed in office or commercial premises, which have a significant supply of space necessary for the free running of such structures.
  • Folding, or door- "accordion", representing two pairs of narrow single-leaf canvases interconnected by means of hinges.They are attached to the door frame on the hinges, when opening a pair of shutters are shifted in opposite directions.
  • Another popular type of double doors are patio doors. These are two glass single-floor sliding doors, one of which is installed on rollers running parallel to a fixed panel of a similar shape. Such structures are set as an exit to the terrace or loggia.
  • Doors "compact" are also bivalved. This is the Italian version, which is becoming popular due to the ease of opening: the doors open when folded in one direction and pressed against the surface of the wall, without taking up any extra space.

Often they are combined by installing a one-and-a-half set in a large doorway: a compact door and a small hinged door.

Dimensions

Double-leaf doors are completed from canvases that are available in salons.

Most manufacturers are guided by the standard sizes for doors set by GOST, but if you wish, you can find a factory that manufactures door leafs to order. Some firms may perform similar work on the individual project of the buyer.

The standard width is 400 mm, 550 mm, 600 mm, 700 mm, 800 mm, 900 mm, 1100 mm. There are manufacturers, for example, "Dveron", "Architect", producing doors of any width with a difference of 10 mm.

The height can be as high as 2000 mm, which is common for most apartments, as well as 2300 mm, which is convenient for steel apartments or houses with high ceilings. For arched structures or doors with a transom, a non-standard height door leaf can be made in 10 mm or 50 mm increments.

Asymmetric installation options are usually selected based on the size of the box and the wishes of the buyer. Such doors can consist of one and a half basic blades and a half additional sash, the size can be, for example, 800 mm to 400 mm.

Materials

The existing double doors have a significant difference in production materials. This may be natural wood, called an array, or its substitutes. Also produce plastic and glass models. For the entrance doors, metal frames are used, which are refined with wooden overlays, with inserts made of tempered glass or plastic.

Tree

Interior doors are made of thin boards and beams of different price categories:

  • Softwood: pine, larch or cedar;
  • Hardwood: oak, beech, elm, walnut or teak;
  • Exotic woods: mahogany, wenge, rosewood or Karelian birch.

Such products are called solid doors, are heavy and very durable, providing good sound insulation and privacy, respectively, the cost of these doors is very high.

Surface treatment of wooden doors is carried out in several stages:

  • Primer is applied initially, usually in at least two coats to achieve the desired shade of wood;
  • The two-component varnish, having protective and decorative functions, fixes the coloring.

Very often, to reduce the cost of the product, parts of wood are combined with lightweight materials: MDF, fiberboard or particleboard. In this case, the frame-strapping of the door is made of spliced timber, on which a layer of MDF or other material is mounted. To increase the service life of the combined door is subjected to lamination. This process consists of applying a layer of PVC film that protects porous surfaces from moisture and dirt.

Typically, such structures are lightweight, because inside are hollow or filled with various types of filler:

  • Corrugated cardboard having a honeycomb structure;
  • Wooden bars;
  • Chipboard.

To make the appearance of the combined door more attractive, the surface is covered with such material as natural veneer, which is a thin (2-3 mm) section of natural wood of valuable species. Veneer has all the features of natural wood, the appropriate structure and color, indistinguishable from solid wood. On the surface of the door leaf, it is fixed with wood glue.

When creating door panels, plastic panels are often used recently, called ekoshpon, with which the bases of comparatively inexpensive wood are faced. In this case, the front surface of such panels is performed with imitation of wood texture, moreover, to enhance the effect, it is covered with a polypropylene film of the corresponding pattern. This coating is called Cilplex, in addition to the aesthetic functions, it increases the life of the door leaf and facilitates the care of it.

Plastic

Double doors can also be made of such modern material as PVC. Door leafs made of plastic are not afraid of increased humidity. Due to this property, they are used for swimming pools, access to balconies and bathrooms, where humidity is often high and there is a danger of condensation on the surface of the door.PVC structures are very durable, the life of individual items can be up to forty years.

For transitions to cool rooms special insulated plastic doors are made.

Low-cost plastic cloths are shield, in this case they are made with imitation of the panels to create a more interesting appearance or with inserts of polycarbonate glass. More expensive options have real framed inserts, as decoration in which various glasses are usually inserted. It can be opaque triplex, transparent optive or multi-colored stained glass.

Glass

For such modifications as patio doors or classic sliding interior doors, various options for impact-resistant glass are used:

  • Stemalit, colored glass, which is first subjected to staining, and then heated, whereby the material gains additional strength, and the colors become brighter;
  • Satinate, which is also a tempered glass, also has a frosted tint, very often decorated with drawings in sandblasting technique;
  • Optite, which is a particularly durable glass, transparent as it is undergoing the bleaching procedure;
  • Triplex, called laminated glass, because it has a film between two glass layers, thanks to which such glass, even broken, never crumbles.

Sometimes the doors of glass are light panels, in which the built-in LED lights mounted at the manufacturing stage create a special attraction. This light turns the door into a work of art that adorns the room and amazes the guests.

According to the type of fastening, double glass doors can be:

  • Framelesswhich fasten thanks to the system of cables and accessories. Such designs look especially airy and attractive;
  • Fixed in a wooden door frame or in a metal frame made of lightweight aluminum, having various spraying.

In some cases, the door leaf can be made of a mirror, but it is quite rare when you design interior doors due to the low strength of the mirror coating.

Color solutions

There is an unspoken design rule, according to which the color of the door leaf is chosen for the design of the room, and not vice versa. That is, first choose the floor, furniture and wall covering, and only then the door. The exception to this rule are only stained glass doors in connection with their unique colors.

An interesting nuance is the fact that the door leaf usually demarcates the two rooms and must “fit” into the interior of both. The classic option in this case is the combination of the color of the doors and the floor covering.

Since laminate, linoleum or parquet are made of wood or the color of wood, then the door covering of various shades is the most common among interior doors.

The most popular are the following colors:

  • Oakwhich is presented in numerous modifications:
    • white oak, reminiscent of ivory;
    • boggy oak of a brownish-earthy color, having a somewhat sullen but very noble shade;
  • bog oak with patina of “baked milk” color, with cream-colored longitudinal streaks refreshing the palette;
  • white patina oak with a shade of gray;
  • smoky oak, which especially clearly shows the pattern of a tree on a dark gray background;
  • meling oak with a grayish-ash tint;
  • wenge oak, also called chocolate for the predominant shade of dark chocolate;
  • natural oak with a golden honey color.
  • Nutwhich also has many popular tints:
    • Milanese nut, which has the usual light golden color;
    • light walnut, in the shade of which there are reddish tones;
    • dark walnut, whose color is close to the traditional brown;
    • nougat, or melinga, which looks like amber;
    • walnut gold, light brown with golden lines.
  • Wenge, traditional dark chocolate color with black veins and wenge meling, which has a slightly highlighted background with a lighter pattern;
  • Ashrepresented by such species:
    • traditional ash with a light brown tint;
    • Ash Sherwood, golden olive;
    • ash cappuccino, reminiscent of the color of the coffee drink of the same name;
    • gray, or ash ash;
    • pearl, or bleached ash.
  • Rosewoodwhose color varies between pinkish brown and brownish red;
  • Cherrywhich is the traditional red-brown color;
  • The Red treewhich includes such varieties of trees as mahogany, red sandalwood and padouk, having wood of noble red-brown tones;
  • Sapelewhose color is close to mahogany varieties, but with a more pronounced purple hue.

In cases where interior doors are made of plastic, their color is most often white.

Glass door leaves can be stained or monophonic. In the case of stained glass, whether it is a classic stained glass window in Tiffany style, fusing or sandblasting with applying varnish tinting, the colors of the door are consistent with the overall style of the room. Usually stained glass doors protrude solo in the interior, which is chosen precisely taking into account the color and pattern of glass.

Modern design

Double doors are used in various rooms, most often it is the so-called "front" doors, designed to enter the living room. Another application is their use as an interior partition.Such zoning of the room introduces a certain elegance and creates functional advantages, since it allows to open only one of the partitions for daily use.

Double-leaf interior doors can be made of various materials, the choice of which mainly depends on the homeowner and on what type of material is preferable in this interior design. The appearance of such a door usually depends on its design features, under which the design of the canvas itself is chosen. In general, a variety of design door leaf ranges from traditional to cutting-edge design ideas.

Swing doors are most convenient to adapt to traditional interiors. They look familiar, and therefore fit particularly well into the classic versions of window design, furniture placement and choice of lamps. In most cases, two door halves are installed, having a fully symmetrical pattern and size. In especially pompous rooms, for example, decorated in the styles of art nouveau, baroque, and Victorian classicism, two-door panel structures of solid wood with applied patterns or glass inserts are installed.

As inserts often used stained glass, elegant and luxurious. To enhance the impression, a semicircular arch decorated with the same glass elements is mounted above the door frame. Most often, the color of the door leaf and accessories echoes the shades that are present in the furniture.

In the interiors, decorated in modern, vintage or classic style, you can set the same in size and shade door leaf, having asymmetrical abstract glass inserts or door leafs with a mirrored pattern layout. It is interesting to look at such rooms in the tsargovye doors from an array or MDF, having as a decoration thin glass strips embedded between wooden inserts. The so-called “Italian” compact doors, which also save space due to the peculiarities of their design, will look stylish and fresh.

Sliding doors fit perfectly in any of the modern styles.: techno. hi-tech, loft or gothic. At the same time, they take up much less space when opening, although, it must be admitted, they do not allow furniture to be installed close to the walls, near which the door panels move.The exception is cassette doors, which, when opened, "go" inside the wall and are most practical for modern small-sized apartments.

In the case where the owner of the premises wants to implement zoning without loss of natural light, you can use a glass door structure made of impact-resistant triplex or stained glass.

Glass doors suspended in a frameless way will enhance the feeling of free space that is characteristic of modern interior designs. Furniture on metal legs and lamps of futuristic forms will be able to emphasize such doors.

Patio doors, which are glass sliding doors, are also particularly good in modern, stylish interiors. They are usually put as an exit to the terrace, loggia or balcony, which in this case looks like a continuation of the living room due to the transparency of the door structure.

Doors-screens, called "shoji", harmoniously complement the interior in Japanese or Chinese design. Being essentially a variation of the compartment doors, they hide inside the wall, saving space inside small living spaces.The material used as inserts or, in authentic designs, special Japanese paper, is organically combined with curtains and screens in traditional oriental styles.

How to choose?

The choice of double doors is not as complicated as it may seem at first glance. They are selected at the final stage of repair, when the room is conceptually already decorated and it remains to impose the final stroke of the picture.

When choosing a few points are important:

  • Appearance of canvases that can be panel, panel or glass. In all cases, the first thing you should pay attention to is whether the owners like the design, because it will take more than one year to use the acquired doors.
  • Compliance with the style decision of the room. By choosing doors that have the correct details and color, you can combine all the elements of the room into one. Conversely, if the stylish doors will look inappropriate in the interior, you should not choose them, even if they are very attractive in appearance.
  • The strength of the material. It is important to understand that if the doors are made of solid wood, they are durable and can serve more than one generation.Glass doors can be made of double-layer glass, which adds strength to them. Doors made of MDF and plastic are not as strong as natural wood, especially if they are hollow inside.
  • Consumer characteristics: color stability of doors made of natural wood or film coating for structures made of MDF and fiberboard, susceptibility to moisture and warranty periods for this product. You should ask the seller about this, read the accompanying documentation and ask for feedback on the doors of this brand on the Internet.
  • Matching the size of the doorway - an important moment of choice. If it turns out that for the sake of the model of the door you like, you have to expand the doorway, you should carefully weigh the pros and cons.
  • Custom or ready-made doors to purchase, decides, of course, the buyer. The order allows you to install a custom design that turns your door into a unique element of the interior, but takes time to manufacture and additional financial costs. Finished canvases will cost less and can be installed immediately after purchase.
  • The complexity of installing some variants of double doors is also worth assessing in advance. First of all, this applies to cassette models or doors with transoms.
  • The cost of the door is also important. If possible, it is better to compare prices in various stores and online stores by selecting the balance of price and quality.

Beautiful examples in the interior

Doors are not only the entrance to the room, they, as a rule, create the first impression and show the individuality of the room.

For example, an amazing impression is made by the interior with the presence of a double door having white trim and toughened frosted glass inserts. This door provides a bright and attractive contrast with the walls decorated in brown tone, but at the same time it is combined with white wide plinths, accessories of electrical equipment and furniture that has white finish. Since the door frame and the molding above it are also white, they harmoniously combine the doors and the ceiling surface.

Elegant doors from the array with glass inserts, often called "French", are ideal as patio doors that serve to exit the house to the veranda.They have a noble shade of ivory color, which is repeated in the decoration of unusual round windows, baseboards and delicate floral pattern on the walls. The presence of openwork baguette inserts in the door leaf creates a feeling of lightness and lightness of their design, indicating the owners' refined taste.

Elegant rosewood doors look especially attractive due to the strictly mirror arrangement of the veneered coating. They bring comfort and elegance to a room decorated in a simple minimalist style. In order to "fit" the natural shades of natural wood in the techno-style, the owner added the room with a soft, high-pile carpet, the color of which echoes the complex tones of rosewood.

The glass sliding door is very stylish. However, this elegant modern piece of furniture can provide some privacy, being made of dark colored material. This door will be an excellent addition to the home office or work office, its discreet colors, echoing the floor covering and painting the walls, will ensure the cleanliness and simplicity of the interior.Due to the fact that the height of the door leafs slightly exceeds the size of the doorway, the guides along which the door slides are not visible, which is undoubtedly an additional advantage.

Custom-made double-leaf doors of non-standard design can turn a typical room into a room of a medieval castle. A semicircular arched door frame, canvases made from solid natural wood and painted with a patching effect, inconspicuous inserts-panels - all the elements of the decor of this door wonder remind of the ancient traditions of design. The discreet palette of the room is fully consistent with the neutral color finish door panels.
